Millwood Recycling Center @ Millwood State Park, Ashdown, Arkansas
A $22,000 grant from ADEQ’s Solid Waste & Recycling Grants Program, administered by Upper SW RSWMD (Regional Solid Waste Material District) from Nashville, AR was approved to fund a recycling drop-off collection center to be located at Millwood State Park. The collection center will benefit a SW Arkansas 3 county region (Little River, Howard & Hempstead) and will be open to the public. The collection center is prepared to handle 4 recyclable items in separate bins: Paper (newspaper/magazines/office paper), Cardboard, Plastic bottles and Aluminum cans.
This will be the first collection center in Little River County to handle 4 types of recycling materials at one location. The metal collection bins will measure 8′ X 12′ and will be located just south of the Millwood State Park entrance, approximately 300 feet south of the railroad tracks, at 114 CR 33.
Residents at Yarborough Landing wondered how to create a collection center so that we can all make a positive impact on our environment. As a result, a partnership developed between Upper SW RSWMD, Little River County Judge, Clayton Castleman, Howard County Children’s Center, Arkansas State Park at Millwood and local residents. The Arkansas Highway Department has agreed to post signs on Highway 32 near the location to help direct traffic to the location. Local businesses like Millwood Country Club, the Cool Breeze Restaurant, and the Corps of Engineers have given an initial nod to support the center with their collected materials. Soon the vision will become a reality.
The Howard County Children’s Center has developed recycling as a source of income for their adult and children services center for the developmentally disadvantaged. Their efforts have grown to now collect recyclables from Nashville, Mineral Springs, Washington State Park and the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Materials collected are transported to the HCCC where clients sort the materials and prepare truck loads of bales and bundles to ship. Any proceeds generated from the collected materials are used first to offset fuel, labor and equipment to transport the materials to Nashville and then becomes a donation to the 501(c)3 non-profit Howard County Children’s Center in Nashville, Arkansas. Here in rural Little River County, after the trash is collected at curbside, it is transported to the regional landfill in Nashville. By collecting the recyclable materials, the community can reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill and at the same time, support a wonderful facility that provides services and employment for disadvantaged citizens from SW Arkansas.
Materials to be collected:
Cardboard – please flatten any boxes to help with the bulk, brown Kraft paper, feed sacks without plastic liner, no egg cartons
Paper – any newspaper, office paper, newspaper inserts, magazines, junk mail and telephone books
Plastic bottles – containers where the neck is smaller than the body (you can leave the lids on) for example water, soda, liquid detergent bottles, but not margarine tubs.
Aluminum cans – preferably in garbage bags, no steel
** No glass, Styrofoam, plastic shopping bags, electronics or yard waste. Electronics are collected at the Howard County Children’s Center in Nashville where they can also shred documents at their main facility. Old tires can be taken to the landfill in Nashville. Plastic shopping bags are collected at some grocery stores and Walmart.
1 Ton of Paper/Cardboard = 17 trees1 Ton of Aluminum cans = energy to run a TV for 22 years
